He was born Dec. 22, 1926, and grew up on a farm just south of Upsala. A graduate of Upsala High School, he joined the Army in 1946 and was posted to Korea. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he worked on the family farm until he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to work for his brother, Walter Mattson. He later returned to Minnesota where he met and married Avis M. Nelson in 1950. They farmed south of Upsala for four years before they relocated to Fremont, Calif., where Vernon again worked for his brother and later started his own business, J&M Concrete Contractors. He continued his business until his retirement in 1992 when he and Avis moved full- time to the Lake Tahoe area. Health issues dictated their relocation to Rocklin, Calif., in 2001.
He is survived by daughters Barbara White and husband Monte of Loomis, Calif. and Nancy Stewart of Truckee, Calif.; son Ron and wife Dana of Folsom, Calif.; and granchildren, Stephanie, Christine and Tim White, Jennifer Hagan, Christopher Meredith, Katrina Stewart and Gunnar Mattson.
He was preceded in death by his wife Avis who passed away in 2005; his brother and three sisters, Anna Smedman, Gladys Tait and Agnes Zellmer.
A private family memorial will be held in his honor and later this year, interment will be in the East Swanville Cemetery.
