Boys Basketball: Swanville seizes early lead, but Upsala’s depth too much

Swanville started fast against the Upsala boys basketball team, Tuesday, building a 25-16 lead midway through the first half.

However, the Cardinals controlled the game from that point on, closing the half on a 25-7 run en route to a 92-64 win.

Upsala employed a deep offensive attack to devastating effect, finishing with eight players scoring at least seven points.

Sophomore Christian Pekarek led the contingent, scoring 24 points and dishing out four assists.

Junior Nick Frieler scored 12 points and senior Thomas Ripplinger and junior Garrett Wolf each had 10 to join Pekarek in double figures.

Juniors Matt Abeler (9) and Eric Frieler (8), sophomore Dylan Zimmerman (8) and juniors Avery Smieja (7) and Andy Nelson (4) rounded out the scoring for the Cardinals.

Smieja had nine rebounds, Zimmerman had eight and Abeler dished out a team-high five assists.

Swanville was led on offense by senior Derek Pfeiffer, who scored 11 points.

Juniors Austin Mollner and Colten Kruzel added 10 and eight points, respectively.

Upsala hosts Royalton and Swanville plays at St. John’s Prep, Friday.
