Nordic Skiing: Girls earn second, boys place fifth at Little Falls Invite
By PATRICK SLACK
A lack of snow forced Monday’s Little Falls Invite to Mount Itasca in Coleraine, but the Flyers boys and girls Nordic ski teams still put together strong performances.
The girls team, led by sophomore Maria Hauer in sixth place, earned second out of 10 teams behind champion Grand Rapids.
Senior Preston Zimny led the boys team to fifth out of 12 squads.
Hauer finished with the third-best classic time during the race in 18:02, leading to an overall finish of 34:29.
Junior Chelsea Rutz placed eighth (35:01), junior Mattia Hendrickson earned ninth (35:18) and sophomore Kaitlin Geisenhof crossed the line in 11th (35:38) to also score for the Flyers.
Juniors Chloe Houle (40:27) and Josie Lange (40:31) and seniors Ingrid Floersheim (42:10) and Alishia Olson (48:41) rounded out the varsity lineup.
Zimny captured the fifth-best classic time en route to a ninth-place finish overall (29:53).
He was followed by senior Nathan Almen in 18th (31:34), sophomore John Gottwalt in 25th (32:58) and junior Brian McNamara in 28th (33:04).
Sophomore Mathew Massmann (34:34), eighth grader Gunnar Kleinschmidt (37:08) and sophomore Easton Johnson (38:41) also competed for Little Falls.
The Flyers are scheduled to compete at Bemidji, Saturday.
