Boys Basketball: Nelson, Pekarek guide fast-paced Cardinals offense over Royals

The Upsala boys basketball team opened up a 35-22 halftime lead, then continued to stretch it further, Friday, earning a 76-42 home win over Royalton.

Junior Andy Nelson and sophomore Christian Pekarek led nine different Cardinals in the scoring column with 17 points apiece, followed in double figures by sophomore Dylan Zimmerman with 11.

Pekarek added seven rebounds and six assists while Zimmerman posted a double-double with 12 rebounds.

Juniors Avery Smieja (9), Matt Abeler (7), Nick Frieler (7) and Eric Frieler (3), senior Thomas Ripplinger (3) and junior Garrett Wolf (2) added offense for Upsala.

Ripplinger had seven rebounds and Smieja grabbed five rebounds and blocked four shots.

Senior Steve Hoff scored 16 points and Matt Silbernick contributed eight to lead Royalton.

Junior Justin Opatz (6), seniors Tyler Makela (6), Dan Anshus (3) and Curtis Makela (2) and junior Ethan Zimny (1) rounded out the scoring.

Upsala hosts Holdingford and Royalton plays at Bertha-Hewitt tonight.
