Boys Basketball: Eighth-ranked Browerville fends off Upsala 65-60

The Upsala boys basketball team kept clawing at eighth-ranked Browerville’s lead throughout Friday’s game.

But in the end, the host Tigers were able to fend off the Cardinals, winning 65-60.

Browerville built an early 11-point lead before Upsala closed within 27-24 at the half.

The Tigers were once again able to stretch their lead to 11 in the second half, but the Cardinals cut the gap to three with 30 seconds to play before Browerville closed out the win.

Juniors Eric Frieler and Nick Frieler reached double figures for Upsala with 15 and 11 points, respectively.

Sophomore Christian Pekarek accumulated nine points, six assists and four rebounds and junior Garrett Wolf had seven points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Juniors Andy Nelson (6), Matt Abeler (4) and Avery Smieja (4) and senior Thomas Ripplinger (4) also scored for Upsala.

The Cardinals play at St. John’s Prep, Thursday.
