Given the team’s dominant play throughout the season, it appeared inevitable.
With a 73-33 win over West Central Area, Thursday, it became official, as the Upsala girls basketball team clinched the Prairie Conference championship.
The Cardinals’ defense shut down the Knights from the start, accumulating 25 steals to garner extra possessions.
Taking advantage of those chances was the quartet of seniors Kimmy Mrozek and Kaitlyn Wuebkers and juniors Tracy Herzog and Aimee Pelzer.
All four players scored at least 14 points, with Herzog leading the way with 16.
Herzog and Wuebkers also pulled down eight rebounds while Mrozek and Pelzer each picked up five steals.
Pelzer distributed a team-high 11 assists.
Senior Donna Ripplinger (7), junior Sadie Welinski (3) and seniors Dawn Evoniuk (2) and Melissa George (2) also scored for Upsala.
The Cardinals play at Bertha-Hewitt tonight.
