Floersheim, Wasland among LF Nordic skiers to earn state awards

Little Falls senior Ingrid Floersheim earned all-state academic honors and boys and girls Nordic ski head coach Terry Wasland earned Minnesota Coach of the Year honors at the state banquet in Biwabik, Feb. 15.

The girls team received a Gold Academic Award for a combined grade-points average (GPA) of 3.93 and the boys teams received a Silver Academic Award for a combined GPA of 3.6.

Wasland created the Little Falls Nordic ski program 17 years ago and with the help of parents, students and community members was able to raise funds to save it during budget cuts.

Wasland, who has come back after suffering a heart attack while skiing with the team at practice only a few years ago, still skis with the team at practices.

This year’s girls team won its seventh straight section title this year and advanced to place seventh at the state meet.

In the nomination letter submitted by Brainerd co-head coaches Chris Hanson and Mary Claire Ryan, the coaches said that Wasland leads teams that “Not only win, but win with grace. He and his athletes are always supportive of every team and skier on the snow.”

“He is an advocate for the sport, he gets the best from his kids and he earns their respect as well as the respect of his fellow coaches,” Hanson and Ryan said.
