Wrestling: Pierz qualifies nine, Holdingford five and Royals three for state

The Pierz wrestling team’s dominance of Section 7A continued another weekend as nine wrestlers qualifying for the state tournament.

Holdingford had four individual champions and a runner-up to qualify five wrestlers, while host Royalton-Upsala had three wrestlers crowned champion Saturday evening.

Earning first place in their weight classes for Pierz were senior Nathan Tomala and sophomores Evan Woitalla and Chris Ortman.

Seniors Alex Julich and Dustin Waytashek, juniors Brad Meyer and Nick Lochner, sophomore Ryley Smude and eighth grader Kolton Eischens will move on as runners-up for the Pioneers.

For the Huskers, Zach Scott took the title at 106, Mike Jarnot won at 138, Kyle Gerads earned first at 145 and Mitch Messman finished first at 195.

Adam Lane will also advance as the second-place finisher at 120.

Senior Andy Poster, junior Cory Wensmann and sophomore Mitch Lange each took first to move on for Royalton-Upsala.

Individual competition begins Friday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul and continues Saturday.

The first round in Class A is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Friday.
