Little Falls named seniors Jodi Bertrand, Dillon Kifer and Preston Zimny and sophomore Maria Hauer as its January Athletes of the Month. Bertrand, a senior on the Brainerd-Little Falls girls hockey team, has played junior varsity or varsity hockey since she was in seventh grade. She was a captain and the starting goalie for this year’s team. “She has led out team in the locker room and is a positive role model for our younger players,” assistant coach Bradley Hubred said. “She is always willing to work on need skills and shows the younger goaltenders how to do specific saves on the ice to help the future of our program.” Kifer, a senior on the Little Falls wrestling team, is a six-year varsity regular for the Flyers. He went undefeated in January and set the school record for most pins with 110. He also holds the school record for career wins. Zimny, a senior on the Little Falls boys Nordic ski team, became a three-time All-Conference skier and three-time state entrant this season. Including his two state appearances in cross county, he has competed in five endurance sports state meets. “Preston also works hard throughout the year and over the summer to prepare himself to compete at this level,” head coach Terry Wasland said. Hauer, a sophomore on the Little Falls girls Nordic ski team, earned Granite Ridge Conference sprint and relay titles and the Section 8 pursuit title with the fastest times in both freestyle and classical. She also competed at her third state meet. “Maria is an extremely hardworking young lady and is very coachable and humble,” Wasland said. Pictured are (from left): Kifer, Hauer, Bertrand and Zimny.
