Boys Basketball: Pierz steamrolls Staples-Motley in playoff opener

The Pierz boys basketball team encountered little difficulty in its Section 6AA opener against Staples-Motley, Thursday, pounding the Cardinals 77-37.

The senior duo of Preston Weber and Caleb Janson ignited the offense for the Pioneers, with Weber sinking 16 points and Janson picking up 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Four other players scored at least six points, including senior Logan Meyer with 10, juniors Cullin Carter and Jess Kasper with eight apiece and junior Mitch Bednar with six.

Senior Dylan Smieja scored four points while seniors Ian Engen, Ben Huffman and Michael Marshik and juniors Ben Boser and Josh Templin each contributed two points.

The Pioneers sprinted to a 44-17 halftime lead before cruising down the stretch for the win.

Pierz plays in the Sub-Section 6AA North semifinals at St. John’s University, Saturday at 7 p.m. against Melrose Area.
