The Little Falls boys hockey team rallied from an early deficit Thursday to advance to the state consolation championship.
In Saturday’s game, the Flyers were able to hang on after building a 4-0 advantage to defeat Rochester Lourdes 5-4 and end the season with a win.
Little Falls’ lone loss in the tournament was to eventual champion St. Thomas Academy.
Senior Joey Hanowski put the Flyers on the board with a goal 9:48 into the game, assisted by juniors Ben Newman and Matt Stumpf.
Hanowski struck again on the power play early in the second, followed by goals from junior Luke Majerle and senior Michael Holthaus to give Little Falls a 4-0 lead heading into the third.
There would be no coasting to the finish, though, as Lourdes netted three goals in a five-minute stretch to close the deficit to 4-3 with 6:52 to play.
Hanowski added a crucial insurance goal with 4:17 left to secure a hat trick in the game and tally his fifth goal of the tournament.
Lourdes once again got within a goal with 27 seconds remaining, but it wasn’t enough, as Little Falls earned its second win of the season over the Eagles.
Little Falls was outshot 36-16, but junior Mike Stumpf outplayed his opposing counterpart in net by stopping 32 to earn the win.
The Flyers finished the season with a record of 20-10.
Seniors on this year’s team included Hanowski, Holthaus, Mike Anez and Mitch Gregory.
