James Shaft, 89

James “Jim” Shaft, a resident of Minneapolis, died March 22, 2012, surrounded by his loving family.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 27. Interment was held at Crystal Lake Cemetery.

Jim was born May 13, 1922. He was the first co-captain of the Minneapolis Henry High School varsity football team and the first in his family to graduate high school. He was a WW II veteran of the U.S. Merchant Marines, Sept. 1942 – Dec. 1945, attaining the rank of 3rd Engineer. A 30-year employee of the Minneapolis Water Deptartment as an operating engineer and loyal and active union member. Jim has been a lifetime North Minneapolis resident. He also spent as much time as possible (over 47 years) at his favorite lake cabin which he built on Fish Lake, Pierz. He loved to hunt, fish and play cards. Jim was a wonderful husband, father and friend. He was one of the best of The Greatest Generation to all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors include daughter, Leslie (Greg) and son, James C. (Sherry); grandchildren, Mark Berg (Shannon)and Chris Berg; great-grandchild, Ava Berg; and sister-in-law, Evelyn Bjerk.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Shirley, and all four of his brothers.
