Girls Basketball: Record-setting Cardinals hold banquet

The Upsala girls basketball team held its season-ending banquet March 27 at the high school.

Upsala went 28-2 during the season, setting a school record for victories while advancing to the section championship.

Award winners included seniors Kaitlyn Wuebkers (Leadership), Donna Ripplinger (Most Improved, Best Practice Player), Kimmy Mrozek (Hustle, 1,000 Point Club), Brianna Westrich (Cardinal), Melissa George (Most Dedicated) and Dawn Evoniuk (Most Dedicated); and juniors Aimee Pelzer (Most Valuable Player), Sadie Welinski (Sixth Man Award),  Alissa Zehrer (Most Dedicated) and Tracy Herzog (Cardinal, Rebound Leader, Blocking Beast).

Earning All-Prairie Conference honors were Mrozek, Wuebkers, Ripplinger, Herzog and Pelzer, with Pelzer being selected as the Most Valuable Player by conference coaches.

Letter winners included Mrozek, Wuebkers, Ripplinger, Westrich, George, Evoniuk, Pelzer, Herzog, Welinski and Zehrer.

“The seniors will be sadly missed next year, they had the best season ever,” Upsala head coach Paul Pelzer said. “From their sophomore year on they had an amazing record of 72-9 and never lost a conference game in that time. What a great crew to coach.”
