Sophomore Eric Lampert turned in five scoreless innings of starting pitching and senior Travis Schneider got the final four outs in relief.

In between, the Upsala-Swanville Area (USA) baseball team produced just enough offense to give the Patriots a season-opening 2-1 home win over Melrose Area, Monday.

Junior Colten Kruzel was involved in both of the Patriots’ scoring plays, driving in junior Alec Griffith with a double in the fourth and scoring the go-ahead run on a base hit by junior Andy Nelson in the sixth.

Lampert allowed only three hits and one walk while fanning nine batters before being lifted due to a limited pitch count for his first start.

Junior Eric Frieler added a single and stole a base.

USA hosts Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa, Thursday.
