The Holdingford baseball team faced multi-run deficits in each of its games this week, but scored a combined nine runs in its final at-bats to record a pair of non-conference home wins.
Holdingford 6, Melrose 5
Trailing 5-2 heading into its last at-bat, the Huskers came up with four runs to earn a walk-off 6-5 win over Melrose Area, Monday.
Senior Nick Knettel singled to lead off the inning, stole second and came home to score on a base hit by senior Luke Doll to make it 5-3.
Junior Sam Butler followed by reaching on an error and sophomore Jeremy Springer walked to load the bases, then senior David Bialka cleared the bases with a triple to give Holdingford the win.
Butler went 2-for-3 and drove in a run and sophomore Jake Nelson earned the win in relief.
Holdingford 11, Milaca 10
A day after using a four-run seventh to rally to a win, the Huskers picked up five runs in their final at-bat to stun Milaca 11-10, Tuesday.
Trailing 10-6, sophomore Jordan Gombos reached base to lead off the bottom of the seventh, but Holdingford’s next two batters were retired, leaving no margin for error.
Junior Cody Schwinghammer and sophomore Cody Bialka delivered back-to-back pinch hit singles, followed by a single by Springer and a walk by David Bialka to cut Milaca’s lead to 10-9.
After a steal put the tying run at third and the winning run at second, Nelson came through with a two-run single to cap another comeback victory.
Nelson once again earned the win in relief, working 2 1/3 scoreless innings.
Nelson and Springer each had two hits and senior Mike Jarnot knocked in a pair of runs.
