Softball: Little Falls rallies from five runs down to top Princeton in extra innings
By PATRICK SLACK
Princeton scored three runs in the first, three in the second and another in the fourth to jump out to a 7-2 lead at Little Falls, Tuesday.
But the Flyers slowly worked their way back into the game with runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth, setting the stage for late-inning heroics.
Trailing 7-5 in the bottom of the seventh, senior Holly Kampa led off with a single and came around to score after an error and a groundout.
Still down by one, senior Kala Bzdok doubled in junior pinch runner Chelsey Karnowski to send the game into extra innings.
After senior Chloe Nelson delivered her third scoreless inning of relief in the top of the eighth, junior Jamie Jenks doubled with one out in the bottom of the inning.
A stolen base put Jenks at third, then senior Brichelle Brummer came through with a walk-off single with two outs to cap the comeback and give Little Falls an 8-7 triumph.
“When we were down 6-2, I told the girls that good teams come back and that we are a good team,” Little Falls head coach Ron Hinnenkamp said. “I am so proud of the way we kept battling, not only each inning, but with some great two-out at-bats. The girls took turns coming up with big hits and big plays.”
Four of the Flyers’ final five runs scored with two outs.
Bzdok finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Jenks went 2-for-4 with a homer, three RBIs and scored twice.
Seniors Britian Conley and Makayla Jorgensen also had a pair of hits and Kampa crossed the plate twice.
Little Falls plays at St. Cloud Cathedral, Thursday.
