Softball: Melrose outlasts Swanville 15-14 in back-and-forth battle

A rollercoaster game that featured a combined 37 walks and 10 multi-run innings ended with Melrose Area persevering 15-14 over Swanville, Monday.

Swanville jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings, only for the host Dutchmen to even the score after four.

The Bulldogs seized the lead right back with five runs in the top of the fifth, but Melrose again responded to tie the game at 11-11 heading into the seventh.

Both teams picked up two runs in the seventh inning to force extra play.

Swanville took its fourth lead with a run in the top of the eighth, but Melrose took its first lead and the victory with two in the bottom of the frame.

The Bulldogs mashed 17 hits in the game, led by junior Tiffany Barthel with four, while senior Molly Jordan and freshman Simone Grittner each collected three.

Senior Lexi Loven and junior Marissa Evans added two hits apiece and senior Courtney Sieben and junior Abbey Schultz each had one.
