Upsala kept coming at Swanville in Tuesday’s Prairie Conference softball showdown.
But after going ahead right away in the first inning, the visiting Bulldogs limited numerous scoring opportunities to cling to its lead and earn a 15-12 win.
A back-and-forth start resulted in Swanville taking a 10-6 lead through four innings.
The Cardinals picked up six runs in its final three at-bats to close the gap, but Swanville escaped bases loaded jams each time to maintain its lead and preserve the win.
Seniors Molly Jordan and Lexi Loven, junior Tiffany Barthel and freshman Simone Grittner had three hits apiece for Swanville, with all of Jordan’s going for extra bases.
Senior Vickie Maciej, junior Marissa Evans and sophomore Jackie Panek also had multi-hit games and combined to score six runs.
Junior Kaelin Smieja and Barb Kobylinski each had three hits, with Smieja drilling a triple, to lead Upsala.
Senior Kristen Smieja pitched and collected two hits for the Cardinals.
“Pitching was a problem for us,” Swanville head coach Tom Bzdok said. “However, our hitting really came through for us. It allowed us to build an early lead that we kept adding to.”
Upsala hosts Royalton and Swanville hosts St. John’s Prep, Thursday.
