Boys Track and Field: Little Falls seizes section crown, advances to true team state
By PATRICK SLACK
Senior Derek Toso won three events and took a close second in another, scoring 71 of the Little Falls boys track and field team’s 456 points at Tuesday’s Section 8AA true team meet.
In the end, the Flyers used every one of them to narrowly upend host Detroit Lakes 456-447, claim the section championship and earn a spot in the state true team meet.
Toso blazed past the field in the 100-meter dash in 11.35 seconds and in the 200 (24.04) and also topped the field in the long jump (19-feet, 11-inches).
Seniors Preston Zimny and Luke Pennington added first-place performances on the track, with Zimny taking the 3,200 (10:02.65) and Pennington winning the 300 hurdles (42.99), while junior Jordan Petrone added an event win in the field in the pole vault (12-feet).
Finishing as runners-up for Little Falls were juniors Garrett Horejsi in the 300 hurdles (43.53) and Seth Wester in the discus (126-feet, 8-inches), Toso in the 400 (52.35) and Pennington in the 110 hurdles (16.87).
Other top performances included third-place finishes by junior Travis Spillum in the long jump (19-feet, 6-inches), sophomore Tim Infinger in the 200 (24.73) and Zimny in the 1,600 (4:37.96); fourth-place efforts by junior Isaiah Korver in the triple jump (40-feet, 0.5-inches), Horejsi in the 110 hurdles (17.67), the 4×400 relay team (3:38.68) and the 4×800 relay team (9:00.34); and fifth-place marks by junior Austin Bjorge in the pole vault (11-feet), sophomore Jalen Wuchko in the shot put (44-feet, 4.5-inches), Infinger in the 400 (54.28), Korver and Spillum in the high jump (5-feet, 6-inches) and the 4×100 relay team (48.61).
The true team section and state competition is separate from the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL), put on by state coaches with the desire to measure overall team strength and encourage teams to develop all events and improve participation.
Each participant earns team points in every event, unlike the MSHSL state competition, in which only individual state finalists earn team points.
Little Falls’ next competition will be at Melrose Area, Thursday.
The state true team meet will be held in Stillwater, Friday – Saturday, May 18 – 19.
