Baseball: Pierz rallies from nine down to win opener, dominates finale against HLWW
By PATRICK SLACK
After spotting Howard Lake-Waverly Winsted (HLWW) a 9-0 lead early in the first game of a doubleheader, Pierz outscored the visiting Lakers 17-2 the rest of the night to sweep a pair, Thursday.
Pierz battled back in the opener with a seven-run outburst in the third, followed by runs in the fourth and fifth to tie the score, only for HLWW to regain the lead with a run in the top of the sixth.
But junior Cody Nordmann ensured the comeback would not be squandered, coming through with a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to put Pierz on top.
Junior Ben Boser then finished off HLWW in the seventh, giving the Pioneers an 11-10 win.
Senior Logan Meyer and Boser each had three hits and combined for three RBIs and three runs to lead the Pierz offense, while junior Brady Dorn blasted a three-run homer.
Juniors Cody Weiss and Brad Meyer each added a pair of hits and an RBI.
Boser allowed only one run over 4 2/3 innings of relief to record the win.
There would be no need for any similar dramatics in the finale, as Logan Meyer shut down HLWW on a complete-game four-hitter, guiding Pierz to a 7-1 win.
Dorn had two hits, including his second homer of the night.
Junior Jon Fuhrman and Boser each singled and scored twice, with Fuhrman stealing two bases.
Junior Nick Lochner added a double and a run.
“We played a very good ball game,” Pierz head coach Danny Saehr said. “Logan Meyer pitched a great game and we played great defense behind him. This was two nice wins for us today.”
