Melvin Grell, 81

Melvin Grell, a resident of Pierz, formerly of St. Paul, passed away Thursday, May 10, 2012, at the Pierz Villa in Pierz.

A Mass of Christian Burial will was held Monday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz with Father Gerald Dalseth officiating, concelebrating with Father Kenneth Brenny. Burial was at St. Joseph’s Parish Cemetery in Pierz. Military Rites were conducted by the Pierz American Legion Post #341.

Melvin H. Grell was born Oct. 13, 1930, in Pierz, to Joseph and Elizabeth (Donek) Grell. He graduated from Little Falls High School. Continuing his schooling, Melvin graduated from St. John’s University Collegeville in 1952. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. After Melvin’s honorable discharge he graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School. Melvin was an attorney for American Family Insurance for over 40 Years. He was a long time parishioner of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, and was also a member of the American Legion Post #0341. Melvin was an avid reader and enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with family and friends. Melvin is survived by 17 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Grell; brothers, Tony, Jack, Joseph, Victor and Clarence.

Pallbearers were nieces and nephews, Nona (Grell) Terrahe, Sandra (Grell) Neutzling, Victor Grell II, Elizabeth (Grell) Bloom, Charles Grell, Joyce (Grell) Donabauer and Jon Grell.

Memorials are preferred to St. John’s University and  the Poor Clares Monastery. The family extends a special thanks for care and support to the staff of the Pierz Villa and St. Croix Hospice.
