Roy E. Jurek, 80

Roy E. Jurek, a resident of Pierz, passed away peacefully Monday, May 14, 2012, at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held May 18, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz, with Father Gerald Dalseth officiating. Burial was at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls.

Roy E. Jurek was born May 15, 1931, in Lakin Township, Morrison County, to the late John and Mary (Tadych) Jurek. Roy was the second son of a second generation Polish immigrants and farmers from rural Foley. With his 10 brothers and sisters, he learned early the values of hard work, integrity, family, church and one-liners. In 1957, he caught an unsuspecting neighbor taking gravel from his family farm and 10 months later Sept. 1, 1958, he married the gravel hunter, Mary Ann Czeck. They raised five children in Northeast Minneapolis, Fridley and Coon Rapids while Roy worked tirelessly on the line at Onan Corporation. Later, Roy and his wife owned a rural grocery store servicing the Morrill area before retiring to Pierz. Roy enjoyed catching and not releasing sunnies, napping on deer stands and boasting his self-proclaimed command of the Polish language.

Roy is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Jurek of Pierz; children, Loriese (Robert) Stoll of Lakeshore, David Jurek of Ramsey, Linda (Perry) Smith of Plymouth, Donald (Autumn) Jurek of Traverse City, Mich., and Daniel (Meredith) Jurek of Minneapolis; grandchildren, Elise, Aaron, Justin, Noah, Henry, Oliver, Quinn, Aiden and Scout; sisters, Mary Ann (Rodney) Wahlberg of Zimmerman, Janet Pappenfus of St. Cloud, Theresa Spiczka of Gilman and Martha (Ronald) Engesether of Portland, Ore.; brothers, Justin (Corie) Jurek of Foley, Jake (Sally) Jurek of Foreston and Johnny (Judy) Jurek of Foreston. Roy was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Delores Kelash, Margaret Dahler and Katheryn Lentner; granddaughter, Katelyn Jurek and two brothers-in-law, Delroy and Everette.

Pallbearers were Aaron Bruss, David, Donald, Daniel, Justin and Johnny Jurek. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to the Children’s Cancer Research Fund in honor and loving memory of granddaughter, Katelyn Jurek, who preceded Roy in death Feb. 22, 2007.
