Softball: Upsala tops Swanville in playoff opener, falls to top-seeded Browerville in quarters

After the Swanville softball team swept the regular season series, Upsala turned the tables in a 19-9 victory in the first round of the Sub-Section 5A East playoffs, May 10.

Upsala took control of the game with seven runs in top of the third to go ahead 8-1.

The host Bulldogs closed the gap to 8-4 after four, but the Cardinals scored seven more unanswered runs in their next two at-bats to put the game away.

Sophomores Barb Kobylinski and Alissa Zehrer collected three hits apiece to lead Upsala offensively.

Freshman Marrah Prokott earned the complete-game win on the mound.

Junior Marissa Evans had three hits and two runs and senior Lexi Loven singled and tripled to lead Swanville.

Sophomore Jackie Panek tripled, freshman Simone Grittner doubled and seniors Vickie Maciej and Courtney Sieben and junior Abbey Schultz each singled.

Swanville finished the season with a record of 7-11.

Seniors on this year’s team for the Bulldogs included Molly Jordan, Loven, Maciej and Sieben.

 

Browerville 10, Upsala 2

Upsala then traveled to Browerville, May 18, to take on the top-seeded Tigers in the sub-section quarterfinals.

The Cardinals stayed in the game early, but Browerville slowly pulled away to earn a 10-2 victory.

Senior Kristen Smieja tripled for Upsala.

Upsala finished the season with a record of 4-13.

Seniors on this year’s team for the Cardinals included Smieja, Megan Tschida and Miranda Voller.
