Royalton’s defense was sharp and senior Steve Hoff was even sharper, lifting the Royals baseball team to a 9-0 shutout at Isle, Tuesday, to close out the regular season.

Hoff allowed just three hits in the complete-game shutout, fanning three batters.

“Our pitching and defense was the story as we had 16 infield putouts and didn’t make an error,” Royalton head coach Rusty Gwost said.

Offensively, freshman Jordan Smieja went 3-for-3 and senior Jeremy Grittner doubled twice and drove in two runs to lead the Royals.

Royalton opens Sub-Section 5A East play at Hinckley-Finlayson, Friday, at 1:30 p.m.
