Diane will be remembered as a loving wife, caring mother and generous friend with a sweet smile and great sense of humor. She was born March 14, 1942, in Little Falls, to Ira and Lillian (Norberg) Newman. Diane grew up in Little Falls, living first on Sixth Street N.E. and then on 13th Street S.W., next to Pine Grove Park. As a teenager, she enjoyed sewing, drawing, attending dances with her friends and learning her mother’s home-cooked recipes. She graduated from Little Falls High School in June 1960. Diane was a member of Bethel Church in Little Falls and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville. On Aug. 20, 1960, Diane was united in marriage to Joe Koenig at St. John’s Church in Swanville. In 1961, the couple moved to Swanville, Joe’s hometown. After she was married, she occasionally competed in Powder Puff races, but she also loved filming and cheering Joe on at stock car races, and then later at snowmobile races. In 1974, Diane and Joe purchased the Conoco service station, expanding the building twice and then adding on a convenience store in 1991. Known for her green thumb, Diane enjoyed raising African Violets, selling hundreds of violets each year at local craft shows, greenhouses, gift shops and open house events at her home on Lake Pepin. In the summer, she loved tending to her large garden and canning the produce to share with others. She also enjoyed fishing, knitting, crocheting, sewing, and spending time with family and friends. Diane and Joe retired in September 2004 and moved to the Courtyard Apartments in her hometown of Little Falls, in May 2005. On Aug. 20, 2010, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their children. Although her health declined in recent years, she kept in touch with family and friends via email, phone calls, and handwritten notes.
Diane is survived by her husband Joe Koenig, Sr.; daughter, June Weeks and husband Mike; daughter, Becky Hillig and husband Scott; daughter, Sharon Almeida and husband Jeff; son, Joe Koenig, Jr.; grandchildren, Nikolas, Luke, Paige and Kate; as well as many nieces, nephews, close relatives and beloved friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lillian (1965) and Ira (1979) Newman; siblings Alan Newman (1991), Richard Newman (2004), Jeanette Loscheider (2002); infant sons Joseph Alan (1962) and John Joseph (1964), and beloved great-aunt Louise Arnold (1969) and aunt Doris Plettl (2007).
