Jerry Lee Bottema, a resident of Pierz and formerly of Big Lake, died Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at the St. Cloud Hospital of St. Cloud.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, June 1, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Big Lake with Fr. Gene Doyle officiating. Visitation will be Friday at the church from 8:30 a.m. – 11 a.m. There will be a private interment at Our Lady of the Lake Cemetery.
Jerry was born Aug. 8, 1941, in Eagle Center, Iowa, to Albert and Esther (Klein) Bottema. He moved with his family to the Big Lake area when he was nine years old. Following high school graduation, Jerry served his country in the United States Marine Corps. On July 16, 1966, he was united in marriage to Gladys “Corky” Korte. Jerry owned and operated Jerry’s Plumbing and Heating in Big Lake for over 40 years. He was a founding member of Our Lady of the Lake Church and was active in many aspects of the church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Jerry was a member of the Big Lake American Legion and the Monticello VFW. He was instrumental in helping to start the Big Lake Spud Fest and remained active in its ongoing success for many years. Jerry enjoyed golf, fishing and hunting. Sports were a big part of Jerry’s life and he participated and later sponsored many softball and bowling teams. He and Corky retired to Pierz six years ago.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Gladys “Corky”; sons, Terry (Patti) Bottema of Big Lake and Larry (Kristi) Bottema of Bethel; daughter Kim (Todd) Moffitt of Cushing; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Dan, Ron and Leonard; and sister Carol Flynn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Esther; and stepmother, Marie.
