Pierz freshman Jessica Hawks hits a drive off the tee during Monday's Section 6AA tournament at Blackberry Ridge in Sartell. Hawks carded a 90 to advance to the final round of the section meet.

Pierz freshman Jessica Hawks fired a round of 90 during Monday’s opening round of the Section 6AA girls golf meet at Blackberry Ridge in Sartell, advancing to the final day of competition.

Hawks overcame a slow start to shoot a 45 on the front nine, then matched that score on the back nine.

“She showed her confidence in her driver that carried her the way,” Pierz head coach Steve Holbrook said. “That is something Jessica has going for her: she knows her swing, what is working and what isn’t.”

Senior Anna Poster and junior Katie Kowalzek followed Hawks with scores of 107 and senior Beth Woitalla finished at 112.

The Pioneers placed 12th as a team.

The final day of the section tournament takes place Tuesday at Blackberry Ridge in Sartell.
