Legion Baseball: Valentine homers, hits game-winner as Little Falls wins Avon tourney

The Little Falls Legion baseball team routed Dassel-Cokato 10-0 to reach the finals of the Avon wood bat tournament, July 7, then edged Albany 4-3 in the championship.

Spencer Fenske tossed a one-hit shutout against Dassel-Cokato, striking out 10 batters.

Matt Valentine delivered the big blow offensively with a three-run homer.

Valentine, Nate Backowski, Michael Anderson, Matt Stumpf, Spencer Fenske and Michael Holthaus collected two hits apiece for Little Falls while Collin Eckman and Josh Wenzel contributed doubles.

With the score tied in the top of the ninth in the championship game against Albany, Valentine delivered what turned out to be the game-winning single with two outs to lift Little Falls to the title.

Valentine and Fenske each went 3-for-4 and Tony Arnold singled and doubled.

Nathan Masog struck out two batters in two scoreless innings of relief to notch the win.
