Becky Barton started her new job as an associate at the Little Falls Eye Care Center June 1. Armed with a degree from the New England College of Optometry, Barton is excited to begin her career in Little Falls.
Barton grew up in Bird Island and received her bachelor of science degree in business management from St. Cloud State.
“Halfway through my time at St. Cloud State, I had decided I wanted to get into the medical field,” she said. “I wanted a career interacting with patients, yet be able to raise a family and be home with them, too.”
Barton graduated from the Boston optometry school in May. Before that day though, she, knowing she wanted to move back to Minnesota, looked for optometry positions in the state. She found Todd Baumgartner and Eric Betlock, owners of the Little Falls Eye Care Center, online, looking for an associate that was available for long-term employment.
Barton spent her fourth year of schooling in different internships. She worked in specialized training at the Lowell, Mass., Veterans Administration; the Fenway Community Health Center in Boston, Mass.; a special rotation with exposure to low vision patients (those people whose vision cannot be corrected by glasses) and children; and at the Codman Community Heath Center in Dorchester, Mass., in primary care optometry.
“I am slowly building up my schedule and my patients,” said Barton. “Eric has reduced his schedule to 2 1/2 days a week as he is beginning to transition to retirement. My hope is to slowly take on his patients.”
Barton prides herself in loving the variety of all ages and hopes to be able to treat entire families. Her many jobs will include finding the correct contact lenses for her patients and also glaucoma management.
Besides just graduating, moving from Boston to Little Falls and beginning a new job, Barton didn’t think she would have enough to do. So she added one more activity to her already busy schedule. She and her fiancé, Dustin, are currently planning their July 20 wedding.
“We love to work out together, go dancing, attend concerts and travel,” she said. “When I’m not so busy, I also love to read, practice my photography and spend time at my parents’ cabin near Ottertail.”
Barton looks forward to buying a home in Little Falls, becoming more involved with the community and having a family.
An open house is being planned at the Little Falls Eye Care Center Thursday, Aug. 23, from 2 p.m. – 6 p.m. There will be promotions, snacks and the opportunity to meet Barton.
