A memorial service is planned for Saturday, July 14, at the Lincoln Evangelical Free Church in Cushing, with visitation at 3 p.m., service at 4 p.m., and burial at Moran Riverside Cemetery.
Roger was born Dec. 1, 1939, at the Watland home in rural Moran township in Todd County. His parents were (Andrew) Elias Watland and Olga Sophia Nelson Watland. He was the youngest of seven boys. Roger grew up on the family farm, attending the rural District 45 school through 8th grade, then graduating from the Staples High School in 1957. After high school he worked for Sears, then Jensen Trucking, then attended the University of Minnesota for one year, where he met his wife Lynn. After serving for six months active duty in the National Guard, he worked for Daytons in children’s shoes, working his way up to buyer in Women’s Shoes. In 1962, he married Lynn Bonney from St. Paul. He also managed Schuler Shoe Store in Rochester. In 1971 he and Lynn moved back to rural Todd county, building a house just west of the “homeplace.” He worked for Land O’Lakes in Browerville for 34 years, holding several positions including dryer operator, maintenance, boiler operator and supervisor. He retired in October 2005. Roger was a member of the Lincoln Evangelical Free Church, serving as an usher and a Deacon. His hobbies were deer hunting, fishing and gardening. He and his son Andy farmed the home farm together for the past 10 years.
Roger is survived by his wife Lynn; sons Andrew (Jeanette) of Pierz and Dean, of Browerville; daughter Beth (Joe) Eibs of Le Sueur; brother Wallace (Rebecca), of Shafer; and grandchildren, Emily, Evan and Jacob Eibs and Cory Watland and numerous nieces and nephews.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, (Andrew) Eli and Ollie, and brothers, Leonard, Elwyn, Norman, Donald and LeRoy.
