Legion Baseball: Little Falls’ season ends with narrow loss at districts

After shutting out Brainerd to advance through the sub-district playoffs, the Little Falls Legion baseball team went 1-2 in the district tournament to finish the season with a record of 15-5.

Little Falls 3, Big Lake 2

Gabe Ploof tossed a two-hit gem, striking out 15 to lead Little Falls to a 3-2 win over Big Lake in the opening round of district play in St. Cloud, July 25.

Helping Ploof at the plate were four hitters with multi-hit games, including Joe Tuholsky with three and Tony Arnold, Mitch Gregory and Joey Hanowski with two apiece.

Collin Eckman added a hit and an RBI.

Waite Park 3, Little Falls 0

Luke Thoma held Waite Park to three runs over nine innings of work in the second round of district action, but Little Falls couldn’t convert any of its eight hits into runs in a 3-0 defeat, July 25.

Matt Stumpf, Gregory and Hanowski all went 2-for-4 for Little Falls.

St. Cloud 8, Little Falls 7

The Little Falls offense converted 13 hits into seven runs, but dropped a narrow 8-7 decision to St. Cloud in a district elimination game, July 26, to wrap up its season.

Josh Wenzel and Gregory each went 3-for-5, with Gregory scoring twice.

Hanowski and Eckman added two hits apiece, with Hanowski hitting a solo home run.

Little Falls 3, Brainerd 0

Little Falls earned a spot in the district tournament by blanking Brainerd 3-0 in its first sub-district game at home, July 19.

Ploof tossed 6 1/3 scoreless innings to earn the win, striking out four.

Joe Tuholsky and Gregory both had two hits and Eckman drove in two runs.

Bemidji 7, Little Falls 1

Bemidji knocked off Little Falls 7-1 in the sub-district finals, July 19, holding the Flyers to three hits by Hanowski, Wenzel and Gregory, with Hanowski driving in the lone run.
