Samantha Olson-Murray, employed at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls, was named the Little Falls Area Chamber of Commerce Employee of the Month for August. She has been with the Center for 13 years.
“Wow, what an honor. Thank you for this. I never expected that the work I do on a daily basis would get me where I am today,” she said. “I could not have done it and continued to keep working without the support of my coworkers, friends and family.”
Olson-Murray works in both the medical records department and in nursing administration. She assists with discharging patients and the Center’s payment system and patient assessments.
“To keep up the requirements of my nursing assistant degree, I help with patients by answering call lights and work an occasional two-hour shift,” said Olson-Murray. She also is a ward clerk, dealing with physician’s orders, setting patient appointments and making sure they have transportation to an from their appointments. She assists the registered nurses and the licensed practical nurses, plus organizes the paperwork that accumulates each day.
“Sam’s knowledge and flexibility to manage a variety of duties makes her a very valued team member,” said Director of Nursing Jeneva Bellefeuille. “We are very fortunate to have Sam working at St. Otto’s Care Center.”
Olson Murray attended Central Lakes College in Brainerd and received an associate in applied science degree as a medical administrative secretary.
“I always wanted a job in the medical field where I could work with the public,” said Olson-Murray. “It was during college that I made my final decision on a career path.”
When Jim Birchem purchased St. Otto’s Care Center, the previous medical records clerk wanted to stay with St. Gabriel’s Hospital. Murray-Olson said that through her recommendation, she got the job.
Murray-Olson is currently home on maternity leave and will return to work in the end of August. On July 13, she gave birth to Della Kae Kasper.
“I cannot remember what it was like not to have Della in my life,” she said.
In her spare time, she and her partner, Isaac Kasper, work on demolition derby vehicles and she is always present when he competes.
“Della attended her first demolition derby last week,” she said. “She slept through the entire competition.”
Murray-Olson loves to read and indulges in most genres. She spends much of her free time with family and friends, and now, with Della.
For being chosen as the Employee of the Month, Murray-Olson received gift certificates from Broadway Stylists, Perkin’s Restaurant, the Pizza Ranch and Northern Image Landscaping. She had a photo taken by Silker Studio and received a cookbook from the St. Gabriel’s Hospice Program.
