Upsala Heritage Festival: Three days packed with fun

Fun starts Monday with a medallion hunt, a new feature this year

As in years past, during Upsala’s Heritage Festival Days, Aug. 10-12, the community welcomes residents, former residents and visitors to a celebration of the area’s Scandinavian heritage.

Anyone finding a medallion bearing this insignia in the city of Upsala, will win $100 in Upsala Bucks. The medallion hunt begins Monday, when the first clue is posted at various locations at 9 a.m. and on this Web site.

While traditional favorites will be part of the weekend, a new feature will begin the excitement Monday — a medallion hunt.

A medallion bearing the insignia of the parade theme “1950s Cardinal Country,” with the Upsala High School Cardinal logo, will be hidden within city limits. Clues will be posted daily starting Monday, at 9 a.m. Clues will be online at, at the City Hall and at all Upsala businesses.

Anyone who thinks they may have found the medallion, should call the city clerk at (320) 630-5055. If they are deemed the winner — $100 Upsala Bucks will be theirs to spend.

Friday evening, a pre-festival concert by Rhonda Laurie, jazz vocalist, is planned in the Upsala High School auditorium, at 7 p.m.. Titled “Happy Days are Here Again,” the concert reviews popular songs from the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s. The concert is sponsored with Legacy funds through the Upsala Library.

Saturday begins with a 5K run at 8 a.m. with registration at the school, followed by the annual parade down Main Street, starting at 10:30 a.m. A bake sale at the historic Borgstrom House begins at 8:30 a.m.

Following the parade, visitors can head to the city park for the “Party in the Park.” All day long, visitors can enjoy food booths, an antique car show, the Upsala celebrity dunk tank and area musical talent.

The Upsala Area Historical Society is sponsoring an antique show and dinner at the Borgstrom House, beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Other activities that day include an FFA kids pedal pull, petting zoo, bingo in the park and water fights between local fire departments sponsored by Upsala Fire Department.

Saturday evening, a party will include food and DJ music in the Upsala Recreation Building, bean bag and kickball tournaments and the Fire Department raffle, culminating in a 10 p.m. fireworks presentation.

Sunday, guests are invited to a waffle feed held in the Upsala High School cafeteria from 9 a.m. – noon. At 10 a.m., a community worship service will be held in the Upsala High School gym. Events close with a community threshing bee at 1 p.m. at the Dennis Westrich property, east of Upsala.
