Girls Tennis: Pierz tops Little Falls 5-2 in opening event of high school season

The Pierz and Little Falls girls tennis teams kicked off the 2012-2013 high school sports season at a tri meet with Pequot Lakes in Pierz, Friday.

Pequot Lakes upended both the Pioneers and the Flyers while dropping only one match, while Pierz topped Little Falls 5-2 to also pick up its first win.

Against the Flyers, Pierz utilized victories in three of four singles matches and a pair of narrow doubles wins to prevail.

Senior Tarynn Kasper battled back after dropping the first set at No. 1 singles to pull out a 2-6, 6-0, 7-2 win.

Seniors Abby Bujalski and Sara Schlegel cruised in the next two singles slots, combining to drop only four games in a pair of straight-set wins.

In doubles action, seniors Morgan Waytashek and Becca Froelich earned a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 1 singles for the Pioneers, while sophomores Shelbie Boser and Kelsey Moulzolf prevailed 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 doubles.

Junior Jessica Durfee bounced back after dropping the first set to win 5-7, 7-5, 7-4 at No. 4 singles for Little Falls and the second doubles team of senior Alyssa Athman and sophomore Katelynn Kanieski won 6-2, 7-5.

Little Falls junior Jamie Jenks won her match 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 singles to hand Pequot Lakes its only individual loss on the day.
