Frank Voigt, Pierz, was the last of four people released from the Essentia Health System in Duluth following a tragic lightning accident Aug. 18, which claimed the life of his nine-year-old grandson, Luke Voigt.
Frank and his wife, Mary, had joined their son, Paul, and his wife, Laurie, and their two sons, Luke, 9, and Daniel, 7, of Iron River, Wis., along with friends John and Vicky Lintula of South Range, Wis., on their sailboat for an outing on Lake Superior Aug. 19.
When the excursion began the skies were sunny. A couple of hours later the National Weather Services issued a warning to boaters to seek shelter because a storm was coming.
While seeking shelter during the storm, lightning struck as the group scurried through the water toward shore. It injured five people including Luke who later died at the Duluth hospital.
Those taken to the hospital with severe but not life threatening injuries included Paul and Laurie Voigt, Frank Voigt and John Lintula,
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Lake Nebagamon, Wis.
