Volleyball: Pierz overwhelms Crosby-Ironton in straight sets

Upsala tops Huskers, Royalton, Swanville drop close matches

The Pierz volleyball team swept its second match in a row to open the season, pounding visiting Crosby-Ironton 25-13, 25-6, 25-21, Tuesday.

Sophomore Jessica Hawks and senior Brook Brausen set up the offense, dishing out 11 and eight set assists, respectively, while also each recording six service aces against the Rangers.

Junior Bridget Bednar (9) and seniors Anna Welle (6), Alyssa Boser (4) and Michaela Rocheleau (2) led the team in kills, with junior Tiara Hopkins picking up eight digs.

Upsala 3, Holdingford 0

After a close first set, the Upsala volleyball team breezed through the final two, sweeping host Holdingford 25-21, 25-10, 25-13, Aug. 30.

Senior Aimee Pelzer had 13 kills and 10 set assists to lead Upsala.

Seniors Tracy Herzog and MaKenna Peterson each added eight kills and sophomore Danica Cheney had six kills and 18 set assists.

Senior Jena Volkers led Holdingford with six kills and 10 digs.

“We came out slow in the first game, but really played hard and together as a team in the last two,” Upsala head coach Leah Merten said.


Kimball Area 3, Royalton 1

Royalton split the first two sets at Kimball Area, Tuesday, but ended up dropping a close match 25-23, 19-25, 25-22, 25-19.

Junior Emily Fussy was the top hitter for the Royals with eight kills and three blocks, with junior Katelyn Kasella recording six kills and four service aces.

Junior Jacquline Nichols, sophomore Jenna Skajewski and Kasella had nine digs apiece.


Verndale 3, Swanville 1

After falling behind 2-0, Swanville won a lengthy third set before falling 25-20, 25-16, 25-27, 25-10 to host Verndale, Tuesday.

Senior Marissa Evans had 13 kills and 16 set assists to lead a balanced attack for the Bulldogs, with sophomore Danica Hanson distributing 19 set assists and senior Tiffany Barthel picking up six set assists and four kills.

Junior Ashley Maciej tied Barthel with a team-high nine digs and senior Brittany Poegel contributed four digs, four set assists and three kills.


Holdingford 3, LPGE 2

Volkers had 12 kills and 10 digs and senior Amanda Young had 32 set assists as Holdingford outlasted Long Prairie-Grey Eagle (LPGE) 13-25, 25-18, 25-19, 20-25, 15-5, Tuesday.

Senior Alyssa Ohman and freshman Summer Storm added eight kills apiece.
