There was no need for a dramatic comeback this time.

A week after needing a fourth-quarter punt return to pull out a win in its season opener, the Royalton football team dominated from start to finish, pounding visiting United North Central (UNC) 42-8, Sept. 7.

Senior Tyler Hegna opened the scoring with a 32-yard touchdown scamper three minutes into the game, with junior Cade Stang following with his first of six extra points in the game.

The Royals continued to add on quick, striking on a 1-yard plunge by junior Tony Gadacz and 55-yard run by Stang to extend their lead to 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Midway through the second quarter, sophomore Brady Moulzolf connected with junior Jesse Popp on a 35-yard strike for his first career touchdown pass, giving Royalton a 28-0 advantage at the half.

Moulzolf and the Royalton offense continued to apply pressure early in the third quarter, with Moulzolf keeping it himself for a 1-yard touchdown run before scoring from 58 yards out early in the fourth to cap the scoring.

“Tonight was a big night for Brady Moulzolf,” Royalton head coach Jamie Morford said. “Last week was his first varsity start as a sophomore quarterback and that can be a big task. But tonight, Brady had a good night running and throwing the football.”

“We are happy with how he is maturing so quickly,” he said.

Stang finished as the leading rusher for the Royals, carrying the ball 10 times for 132 yards.

Gadacz added 86 yards on 11 carries and Moulzolf racked up 84 yards, followed by Hegna (61), sophomore Jordan Smieja (34), freshman Alex Patton (16), junior Nate Scofield (15), freshman Matt Daleidan (14) and sophomores Trent Cimenski (5) and Kyle Billmeyer (4).

Moulzolf completed 3-of-5 passes for 68 yards.

“We are very proud of how our guys came out and fought against a much bigger opponent to pick up our first win at home this year,” Morford said. “This was a big stepping stone for offensive line. They have been asked to carry quite a load this year and are really starting to gel. We are very happy with our progression up front.”

“Defensively we played very hard nosed, fast Royalton defense tonight,” he said. “It is fun to see so many red jerseys swarm to the ball.”
