Walmart shoplifting case is dismissed in Morrison County
Gerson Alexander Avila, 30, Houston, Texas, had one felony count of theft dismissed Sept. 11, in Morrison County District Court.
On Feb. 12, surveillance at the Walmart in Little Falls showed a vehicle enter the parking lot. Three men got out and entered the building where they chose large pieces of luggage and loaded them up with pharmacy items.
The items were concealed in the luggage and the three left Walmart through the lawn and garden department without paying.
The value of the items taken was more than $8,000. In a similar incident at the Baxter Walmart, $10,000 in merchandise was taken.
The Baxter Police Department was informed Feb. 13, that suitcases were found in the dumpster behind the Super 8 Motel in Baxter. The room had been rented in the name of Avila.
The car registered at the motel matched the description of the one at the Little Falls Walmart.
Employees at the Super 8 Motel told police the men were looking for a FedEx shipping facility because they had some items to ship. The nearest one was in St. Cloud.
Police contacted the St. Cloud FedEx and employees confirmed they received packages from the men to be shipped to Texas. Search warrants were obtained, the packages opened and the stolen items were found.
Morrison County Assistant Attorney Todd Kosovich said the charges were dismissed because the case is being “absorbed” into the Crow Wing County case covering the same events.
