Area Tennis: Little Falls slams Fergus Falls; Pierz, LPGE/USA fall to ranked foes

With a sweep of the double competition and three singles victories, the Little Falls girls tennis team overmatched host Fergus Falls 6-1, Monday.
At first doubles, sophomores Mikayla Gottwalt and Katelyn Kanieski outlasted their foes 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-2, with seniors Amanda Evans and Tori Magee winning 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles and the No. 3 doubles duo of senior Alyssa Athman and sophomore Lindsey Schneider cruising 6-2, 6-1.
Senior Jamie Jenks dominated 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, eighth grader Angela Meschke won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and eighth grader Arielle Emerson prevailed 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4 singles.
In other area tennis action:
Pine City 6, Little Falls 1
Visiting Pine City dealt Little Falls a 6-1 setback, Thursday.
Emerson earned a hard-fought 7-6 (2), 6-4 win at No. 4 singles for the Flyers.
Osakis 7, Pierz 0
Pierz took two matches to three sets, but fell 7-0 to seventh-ranked Osakis in a home match, Tuesday.
Melrose 7, LPGE/USA 0
Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Upsala-Swanville Area (LPGE/USA) took two matches to second-set tiebreakers and another two to a full three sets, but ninth-ranked Melrose Area earned a 7-0 shutout road victory, Monday.
“It is heartening to have such close sets with such a highly ranked team,” LPGE/USA head coach Curt Hatfield said. “This team is capable of upsetting one of these highly-ranked teams on any given day.”
