Volleyball: Pierz, Holdingford split six matches, Swanville sweeps Cathedral at Pierz tournament

Pierz and Holdingford split six matches and Swanville went 2-4 at Saturday’s Pierz tournament.

Pierz opened the tournament with back-to-back straight set wins over Buffalo Lake-Hector and Floodwood before falling to finalists Long Prairie-Grey Eagle and eighth-ranked Mabel-Canton.

The Pioneers then played a pair of three-set matches in the silver division bracket, falling to St. Cloud Cathedral before winning a rematch against Buffalo Lake-Hector.

Senior Brook Brausen had 104 set assists during the tournament, with senior Anna Welle leading Pierz with 30 kills, junior Tiara Hopkins delivering 28 kills and junior Bridget Bednar recording 25 kills and 15 blocks.

Holdingford dropped its opening three matches in pool play before rebounding to win its final three, including two victories against Floodwood before the Huskers closed the tournament with a win over Swanville.

Swanville knocked off St. Cloud Cathedral 25-20, 26-24 in its opening match of the tournament, then the Bulldogs swept Floodwood in the bronze division bracket.
