Rita K. Kiefer, 90
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, Oct. 5, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls with the Rev. Nicholas Landsberger officiating. Burial was in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery.
Rita Katherine Langer was born Oct. 3, 1921, in Pierz, to the late Anna Barbara Meyer and Henry Langer Jr. She grew up in Pierz, as the only sister to Alfred “Jack,” Rheinhard “Rheine,” Michael “Mike,” Wilfred “Pete,” Elmer, and Daniel “Danny” Langer. Rita graduated from the Little Falls High School. Rita was united in marriage to Edward R. Kiefer, Sept. 17, 1946, in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz. The couple made their home in Little Falls, where Rita became a career military wife, raising her family of four daughters. Following Ed’s death, June 9, 1992, Rita continued to live in the family home in Little Falls until her health began to fail. Throughout her life, Rita was a lovely lady, a gracious homemaker and entertainer and a wonderful cook. She loved decorating for all holidays and enjoying special times with her family. Following the deaths of their respective spouses, Rita enjoyed more than a decade of loving companionship with her dear friend Carl Vonderhaar and his family. Rita was a volunteer with Unity Family Health Care, where she loved greeting people and being a resource to the staff of Same Day Surgery and at the Hospitality Desk. She was a life-long member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls.
Rita is survived by her four daughters and their spouses, Mrs. Craig (Kay) Eggleston, Dallas, Texas, Mrs. John (Karen) Compton, Rosemount, Mrs. Panache (Jan) Desai, Naples, Florida; and Mrs. Ken (Lynn) Powell, Houston, Texas; grandchildren Jamie, Nicholas, and Thomas Compton, Julia Eggleston, Jennifer and Samuel Goldsmith, Olivia and Sophia Desai, and Kate, Blake, Jack, and William Powell; three great-grandchildren; brother Elmer; sisters-in-law Rita, Lavina and Julia Langer, and Jan Kiefer; former son-in-law Steven Goldsmith; friend Carl Vonderhaar; and honorary sister Donna Vonderhaar.
Rita lived in Apple Valley the last three years of her life, close to daughter Karen who devotedly cared for her until her death, Sept. 26, 2012.
Rita was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Alfred, Rheinhard, Michael, Wilfred and Daniel, and husband Edward.
