Friday football recap: Pierz, USA and Royalton roll, Holdingford edges Kimball

Football action from Friday, Oct. 5:

Pierz 40, Rockford Area 0

Senior Josh Lanners rushed for three touchdowns, junior Nathan Athman scored twice and junior Tyler Millner found the end zone from 63 yards out in his first game back from an injury to lead Pierz to a 40-0 demolition of host Rockford Area.

The Pioneers attempted only two passes on the night without a completion, but didn’t need a passing attack, rushing for 388 yards on 50 carries.

Lanners finished with 139 yards, Millner had 98, Athman had 71 and sophomore Robbie Skiba contributed 57.

Senior Ben Boser intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble and senior Brady Dorn had two sacks.

USA 37, Osakis 14

Senior Eric Frieler threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as the Upsala-Swanville Area (USA) football team overmatched host Osakis 37-14, Oct. 5.

The game appeared as if it would be a shootout early, with USA taking a 15-14 lead after the first quarter.

But while the Patriots offense would continue to wear down the Osakis defense, scoring a touchdown in each of the final three quarters, USA would not allow another point defensively to improve to 5-1 on the season.

Frieler connected with senior Colten Kruzel on a 14-yard strike for the Patriots’ opening score of the game, then broke loose on a 69-yard run later in the first.

Senior Brock Cichon made a 30-yard field goal and junior Mitch Lange scored on a 1-yard run to put the Patriots ahead 23-14 at halftime.

USA extended that lead early in the second half on a 68-yard touchdown pass from Frieler to senior Garrett Wolf, then put the game away on a 9-yard connection from Frieler to Colten Kruzel.

Frieler completed 10-of-15  passes for 160 yards and rushed for 81 yards on four carries in the game.

Wolf caught four passes for 101 yards and Kruzel hauled in six receptions for 59 yards.

Lange added 71 yards on the ground and senior Austin Mollner churned out 57.

Defensively, Lange made 14 tackles and recovered a fumble and senior Alec Griffith recorded seven tackles.

Royalton 34, West Central 21

Following a scoreless first quarter, Royalton’s offense came alive en route to a 34-21 road win at West Central Area.

Sophomore Brady Moulzolf dashed in for three rushing touchdowns and junior Tony Gadacz ran in a pair of scores to lead the Royals, who amassed 396 yards on the ground.

Moulzolf finished with 117 yards, Gadacz had 114, senior Tyler Hegna picked up 94 and junior Cade Stang added 71.

Holdingford 14, Kimball 13

A successful two-point conversion proved to be the difference in a 14-13 homecoming win for Holdingford over Kimball Area, preserving the Huskers’ perfect record in Central Minnesota Conference play.

Holdingford got on the board first in the opening quarter on a 30-yard touchdown pass from junior Mitch Messman to senior Jon Skwira.

The Huskers maintained a 6-0 advantage into halftime, then junior Jordan Gombos brought the opening kickoff of the second half back 85 yards for a score.

After missing an extra point earlier, Holdingford opted to go for two, converting a pass to extend its lead to 14-0.

Kimball cut the lead in half later in the third quarter, but after striking again later in the third, missed a potential game-tying extra point and could not score again.

Foley 33, Little Falls 8

Junior Jalen Wuchko scored on a 62-yard touchdown scamper to pull Little Falls into an 8-8 tie with 1:22 to play in the first half at Foley.

But the Falcons returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown and added a 31-yard touchdown pass in an 18-second flurry to take a 20-8 lead into the half before pulling away late for a 33-8 victory.

Wuchko rushed for 111 yards on 22 carries to lead the Flyers’ offense, with senior Collin Eckman hauling in four passes for 65 yards.

Junior Trysten Ross recorded eight tackles.
