Football: Holdingford edges Maple Lake to clinch share of CMC championship

Holdingford rode the pinpoint accuracy of junior quarterback Mitch Messman to a 26-21 win at Maple Lake, Friday, and in the process clinched a share of the Central Minnesota Conference (CMC) title.

Messman completed 16-of-18 passes for 246 yards and three touchdowns on the night, with senior Cody Schwinghammer catching eight passes for 145 yards and two scores.

Junior Cody Bialka was the next leading target with three receptions for 35 yards and a touchdown.

Senior Jon Skwira led the Huskers on the ground with 75 yards on 19 rushes, with junior Jordan Gombos adding 54 yards and a touchdown on six attempts.

Mitch Messman added four solo tackles and a sack defensively for Holdingford, with sophomore Matt Messman recording a team-high nine solo tackles along with five assists.

Skwira made seven solo tackles and recovered a fumble and sophomore Nathan Brinker had five solo tackles, a sack and blocked a field goal.

Holdingford will attempt to be the first team other than Pierz or Eden Valley-Watkins to win the CMC title since 2003 at Rockford Area, Wednesday.
