Bertha Bain, 100
Bertha Bain, a resident of Little Falls, formerly of Swanville, passed away Thursday Oct. 11, 2012, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls. Funeral services for Bertha Bain were held Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the Swanville Bible Church with the Rev. David Packo officiating. Burial was in Bearhead Cemetery.
Bertha was born Feb. 10, 1912, in Bruce Township, Todd County, to the late Frank and Elsie (Kriz) Vavra. She grew up and attended school near Burtrum, graduating from Burtrum High School. After graduating, she worked at Gillette State Hospital for crippled children. She later took personal care of several cancer patients. During World War II, Bertha was employed at Hudson Manufacturing Company and also at Rockford Mitten and Hosiery Co. in Rockford, Ill. Bertha was united in marriage to Warren (Jack) Bain, July 16, 1946, in Little Falls. After their marriage, Bertha worked for Herb Nelson Grocery Store in Swanville that is now Bob and Fran’s. The couple also farmed in Culdrum Township until 1973, when Jack’s health declined. The couple then moved to Swanville. Jack passed away, July 13, 1989. Bertha moved to St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls in February 2009. She enjoyed fishing and gardening. She was a very kind, sweet lady who always greeted you with a smile. Bertha was a faithful member of the Swanville Bible Church.
Bertha Bain is survived by her brothers, Joseph Vavra of Belvedere, Ill. and Harvey (Elizabeth) Vavra of Rockford, Ill.; sisters, Clara Vavra of Rockford, Ill., and Helen Vavra of South Beloit, Ill; brother-in-law, Owen Brown of South Beloit, Ill and nieces and nephews.
Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; parents; brothers, Robert, Clarence and Albert Vavra; sisters, Mary Johnson and Fern Brown.
