Royalton appeared to be set for a much easier win in its regular season finale at Wadena-Deer Creek (WDC), Wednesday, sprinting out to an early 14-0 lead.
But WDC managed to tie the score at 14-14 in the second half before the Royals pulled away for a 28-20 win to improve their record to 6-2.
Junior Tony Gadacz led the Royals offense with 157 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries.
Junior Cade Stang added 51 yards and a score and senior Luke Wentland hauled in all six of sophomore Brady Moulzolf’s completions for 88 yards and a touchdown.
“We knew going in WDC was a better program than what its record was showing and they proved that tonight,” Royalton head coach Jamie Morford said. “We came out firing right away and then seemed to put everything on cruise control.”
“We will need to keep our focus for all four quarters, to compete against some tough Section 6A opponents,” he said.
Royalton is scheduled to host Pine River-Backus in the Section 6A quarterfinals, Tuesday.
