The second-seeded Holdingford football team wasted little time squelching any thoughts seventh-seeded Wadena-Deer Creek may have had of an upset, scoring 27 first-quarter points en route to a 51-6 rout in Tuesday’s Section 6AA quarterfinals.

Senior Jon Skwira posted a pair of touchdown runs, sophomore Matt Messman scored from 10 yards out and senior Cody Schwinghammer caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from junior Mitch Messman to give the host Huskers a 27-0 advantage after the first quarter.

Matt Messman struck again to extend the lead to 33-0 at halftime, then junior Cody Bialka opened the second-half scoring with a 14-yard touchdown scamper.

Schwinghammer added a defensive touchdown on a 53-yard interception return, then sophomore Taylor Nitz capped the scoring with a 4-yard rush in the fourth quarter.

Skwira finished with 100 yards rushing on the night on 16 attempts, followed on the ground by Bialka (53), Mitch Messman (51), Nitz (25) and Matt Messman (17).

Mitch Messman also completed 3-of-6 passes for 39 yards.

Holdingford is scheduled to host third-seeded Pierz in the Section 6AA semifinals, Saturday, Oct. 27.

The Huskers dealt Pierz its only loss of the season by a score of 12-7, Sept. 7.
