Playing at fourth-seeded Pillager in the opening round of Thursday’s Sub-Section 5A East quarterfinals, fifth-seeded Royalton quickly snatched a two-set lead.

But after the Huskies rebounded to win the third set, Royalton was on the verge of having to sweat out a winner-take-all fifth set for the opportunity to advance.

However, trailing 24-22, sophomore Jenna Skajewski delivered three service aces as the Royals came back to seize a 25-8, 25-17, 17-25, 26-24 win.

Senior Kalee Petron powered the Royals’ offense with 15 kills, while sophomore Haley Olson passed out 30 set assists.

Junior Katelyn Kasella and sophomore Hayley Gottwalt had 19 digs apiece to bolster the defense, with Skajewski finishing with six service aces and junior Jacquline Nichols and Olson each contributing four.

Royalton will return to action in the sub-section semifinals Friday at top-seeded and sixth-ranked Nevis at 7 p.m.
