Area Volleyball Playoff Roundup: Upsala advances to Section 5A quarterfinals
In area playoff volleyball action Friday:
Upsala 3, Eden Valley-Watkins 0
Seniors Aimee Pelzer and Tracy Herzog each had 10 kills and combined for 30 digs to lead Upsala past visiting Eden Valley-Watkins 25-23, 25-21, 25-16 in the Cardinals’ opening match of the Section 5A playoffs.
Pelzer also picked up 11 set assists and Herzog recorded nine blocks.
Senior Makenna Peterson posted seven kills, 12 digs and 12 blocks and sophomore Danica Cheney had six kills to go with 13 set assists and 11 digs.
Nevis 3, Royalton 0
Royalton matched up with defending Class A state runner-up Nevis in the Sub-Section 5A East quarterfinals, falling 25-5, 25-21, 25-7.
Sophomore Hayley Gottwalt led the visiting Royals’ offense with four kills and senior Kalee Petron and junior Jacquline Nichols finished with four digs apiece.
Royalton finished the season with a record of 6-18-2.
Seniors on this year’s team included Gabby Dupre and Petron.
Sauk Centre 3, Little Falls 0
In a rematch of last year’s Sub-Section 6AA North championship, undefeated and fourth-ranked Sauk Centre upended Little Falls 25-10, 25-9, 25-7.
Senior Noelle Kurowski had four kills and junior Jennifer Ronning had three to lead the visiting Flyers on offense.
Junior Sierra Virnig recorded a team-high 12 digs, with senior Emily Suska adding nine and junior Tristen Zimmerman picking up seven.
Junior Stephanie Wardarski distributed eight set assists and junior Brooke Finch had two.
Little Falls finished with a record of 8-22.
Seniors on this year’s team included Katie Schulte, Kurowski and Suska.
Melrose Area 3, Pierz 0
Host Melrose Area slipped by Pierz 25-20, 26-24, 25-22 in the opening round of the Section 6AA tournament.
Junior Bridget Bednar slammed 12 kills and made five blocks to lead the Pierz offense, with senior Anna Welle contributing four kills and a team-high nine digs.
Sophomore Jessica Hawks passed out 14 set assists and senior Brook Brausen added four, with junior Tiara Hopkins registering six digs.
Pierz finished the season with a record of 19-10-1.
Seniors on this year’s team included Miranda Woitalla, Elizabeth Tomala, Megan Boser, Alyssa Boser, Katie Kowalzek, Kailee Monson, Michaela Rocheleau, Brausen and Welle.
Eden Valley-Watkins 3, Swanville 0
Eden Valley-Watkins squeaked past visiting Swanville in the opening set on its way to a 25-23, 25-13, 25-15 win in the opening round of the Section 5A tournament.
Senior Marissa Evans led the Swanville attack with nine kills, followed by sophomore Steph Koetter (5) and seniors Tiffany Barthel (4) and Brittany Poegel (3), with sophomore Danica Hanson passing out 22 set assists.
Barthel led the Bulldogs’ defense with 16 digs, with Poegel making 12 and Hanson and junior Ashley Maciej each contributing 10.
Swanville finished the season with a record of 7-17-3.
Seniors on this year’s team included Evans, Poegel and Barthel.
Albany 3, Holdingford 0
Albany held off visiting Holdingford 25-12, 25-21, 25-22 in the Sub-Section 6AA North quarterfinals.
Senior Amanda Young set up the Huskers’ offense with 13 assists, with senior Alyssa Ohman planting four kills and seniors Haley Huls and Jena Volkers adding three kills apiece.
Young also led Holdingford with 18 digs, followed in double figures by Volkers (16), senior Hannah Sowada (15) and Huls (13).
Holdingford finished the season with a record of 14-14-1.
Seniors on this year’s team included Janessa Gill, Amanda Beckius, Volkers, Young, Ohman, Sowada and Huls.
