Thanksgiving Turkey Trot in Pierz will benefit Special Olympics

Megan Hoheisel and Tarynn Kapsner have organized a “Turkey Trot” for Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, starting at the Pierz Healy High School. Since it starts early in the morning, runners can “Run now, gobble later,” as the logo on the T-shirts says.

Megan Hoheisel and Tarynn Kapsner, seniors at Pierz Healy High School, wanted to do something special for their National Honor Society project.

Their idea, to raise funds for the Special Olympics swim team in Pierz, has come full circle with their  “Turkey Trot” 5K walk/run set for Thursday, Thanksgiving Day.

It will be held early enough that the T-shirts runners get with their $15 registration fee will ring true, “Run Now, gobble later.”

Registration takes place at Pierz Healy High School by the Memorial Athletic Complex (MAC), from 7:30 p.m. – 8:15 p.m.

Not wanting to leave children out, the girls have included a $3 kiddie walk/run, which starts at 8:15 a.m. Although a T-shirt isn’t included in the $3 fee for the kids walk, Hoheisel said T-shirts can be purchased. Child care is also available at $2 per child or $5 for a family, complete with Thanksgiving projects for the kids inside the MAC.

Medals will be given out to first, second and third place finishers in all age categories; although the age categories have yet to be figured out, Hoheisel said.

Flyers have also been placed in businesses around the city of Pierz.
