In a game that was within four points the entire contest, host Kimball Area erased a two-point deficit in the final minute to edge Royalton 52-48 in Tuesday’s season opener.
Royalton held a 46-44 lead with two minutes to play, then moved back in front quickly after Kimball tied the score with just over a minute remaining.
The Cubs managed to draw a foul and hit both free throws to pull even once again at 48-48, then forced a turnover at midcourt and hit a go-ahead basket with 40 seconds to play.
Royalton was unable to put up a shot on its next possession, turning the ball over to Kimball, which sealed the victory with a score as time ran down.
“It will be a learning experience for us,” Royalton head coach Jeff Schoenrock said. “We will need to work on finishing out a close game. But, we played some good ball most of the game.”
Senior Kandy Meyer led the Royals with 17 points while adding seven steals, six assists and four rebounds.
Junior Emily Fussy added 11 points and six rebounds and senior Kalee Petron contributed eight points and seven boards.
Royalton travels to Onamia, Thursday.
